When the days slowly become shorter in late summer and the first grapes are ready to be picked, one of the most beautiful times of the year begins around the Magdalener Hof: the grape harvest. And there is no need to travel far to experience it – the vineyards of Santa Maddalena and Rencio begin right outside our door. Between historic farmhouses, old stone walls and steep vineyard slopes, grapes are being harvested, tractors carry full crates along the narrow roads, and work on the new vintage begins in the cellars. The main grape variety grown here is Vernatsch, the heart of St. Magdalener, one of Bolzano's most characteristic red wines. Vineyards have shaped this part of the city for centuries, making Bolzano quite unique: just a few minutes from the historic centre, you suddenly find yourself surrounded by a beautiful, centuries-old wine landscape.

The best way to discover our neighbourhood is on foot. Start directly from the Magdalener Hof and walk through Rencio towards Santa Maddalena, following the small roads that wind their way between the vineyards. If you feel like walking a little further, turn it into a proper wine walk: the route through the historic St. Magdalener wine-growing area leads through rows of Vernatsch vines, past traditional wine estates and up to the little church of Santa Maddalena, where wonderful views stretch across Bolzano towards the Rosengarten mountains. Along the way, it is well worth arranging a tasting at one of the family-run wineries. And afterwards? Simply stroll back down towards the Magdalener Hof – perhaps for a glass of St. Magdalener on our terrace. Sometimes the best South Tyrolean excursions really do begin right outside the door.
